Description
By statistical calculation, the author arranged length of one ch'in during the period of about 3,000 years from the period of Yin till the period of Ch'ing in China, and obtained the following results. In the period of Yin - Chou and the period of Northern and Southern Dynasties, length of the scale changed greatly. When there was a great change in length, the scale which had prevailed till then was separated and came to be used jointly with the new scale. In the former period, the Ancient Chou Scale and the Chou Scale of the Short Scale series were used, and in the latter period the Short Scale, the Large Scale and the Northern - Wei Scale of the Large Scale series and the Eastern - Wei Scale were used. Rate of elongation was about 140% in the case of the former and about 120% in the case of the latter. In the period of the Spring and Autumn, and Warring States, the mean value of length remained the same, being 23.07cm, but in the middle period of the Warring States, variance (deviation) became maximum. By the reformation of the metrological system carried out by Shin-guang-ti of Ch'in, the deviation was recorded to be minimum in history in the 120th year from that time. From the Eastern Han period onward, the scale began to be elongated, and the deviation in the scale became maximum in the period of Three Kingdoms. Length of the linear measure for construction after the period of Warring States was about 30cm, remaining almost unchanged, and it combined with the Large Scale in the middle period of T'ang. From the period of T'ang till that of Ch'ing, the Large Scale and the Short Scale were used jointly, but the latter went out of use gradually.
