Description
The effects of several foodstuffs upon the growth of Lasioderma serricorne (FABRICIUS) was investigated. The insects individually reared on foods of seven kinds; insect food I, yeast, fish meal, wheat flour, bread crumb, tobacco and coffee, each ground into powder. The insects were kept at 25℃ and relative humidity of 70% with 16L. and 8D. in a day alternatively. The frequency of larval molts depends on the food-stuffs. The results were as follow: molts of three times were typically observed in the case of insect food I and yeast, four times fish meal, wheat flour and bread crumb, and five times tobacco. The average of period for pre-adult development was 51.2 days in the case of insect food I , 51. 7 days yeast, 68.0 days wheat flour, 70.7 days fish meal, 81.4 days bread crumb, and 108.5 days tobacco. The head width of the final instar larvae was the largest in the case of bread crumb, 635 pm, and the smallest in the case of yeast, 560 nm. The average growth rate of the larval head width reduced according to the increasing frequency of larval molts. The growth rate of the larvae with molts of three times was 1.53, the rate of four times 1.41, and that of five times was 1.33. The rate of adult emergence was the highest in the case of wheat flour, 87 %, and the lowest tobacco, 17 %. All larvae fed on coffee died at the stage of first instar.
