Description
The annual life cycle of natural population was analysed for two herbage breeding species, Scaptomyza pallida and Drosophila nipponica, by studying female reproductive conditions. In the Ishikari Lowland of Hokkaido, northern Japan, Sc. pallida passes through three, but partially two, generations per year, while D. nipponica two, but partially three. Both species hibernate as adults, probably in the condition of reproductive diapause regulated by daylength and/or temperature.
