Description
We investigated three cases showing facial asymmetry. In these cases, facial asymmetry with mandibular deviation became evident with their adolescent growth. The purpose of this study was to clarify the change of morphological features recognized in such patients with time. Case 1 : The patient was an female. Maxilla and mandibular were slightly displaced to the right. The dental midline diference was 5 mm. About four years later, facial asymmetry became conspicuous. Both maxilla and mandible shifted to the right side, increasingly, so the midline difference did not increase so much. Case 2 : The patient was a female. Mandible shifted slightly to the left. The dental midline did not display any deviation, and facial asymmetry was very slight. About ten years later, maxilla shifted to the left quite a little. On the other hand, mandible deviated to the left markedly, facial asymmetry became remarkable. The midline deviation greatly increased to 7 mm. Case 3 : The patient was an female. Facial asymmetry was not obvious, though maxilla deviated to the right and mandible deviated to the left. The dental midline difference was 3 mm. About eight years later, facial asymmetry worsened markedly, mostly because of mandibular severe deviation to the left. The midline difference came to 4.5 mm. These findings suggest that facial asymmetry would become worse in various ways during the adolecent growth period of time. Therefore, facial growth in such patients should be monitored regularly to aid in diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
