Description

An algorithm for the conversion between CIE xyY data and Munsell Hue Value/Chroma notations for Illuminant D_<65> has been developed. Since the reference data for Munsell color chips of a constant Value are converted under Illuminant D_<65> into different tristimulus values Y according to their Munsell Hue and Chroma by the methods reported in previous studies, the Munsell renotation-value function (fifth-order polynomial) cannot be used for the conversion between Y and V in this case. In this algorithm, a modified CIE 1976 cube-root function with two variable constants has been devised. The constants have been adjusted for each division of Munsell Value scale. Only a slight modification of conventional computer programs for the conversion under Illuminant C is needed in practical applications.
