Abstract

The sharkskin fracture was visualized at the die exit in an extrudate flow. It was found that the cyclic penetration of cavity produced the roughness on the extrudate surface. The relationship between the cycle frequency and the nominal wall shear stress agreed with the previous result obtained in the slider-driven Couette flow. At the higher shear stress, the spiral fracture was visualized. The local cavity appeared at the die exit, and moved circumferentially along the die exit. This instability produced the spiral extrudate.
