Description

We have studied about effects of chemicals on wound responses in tea leaves (Camellia sinensis L.). Proteinase inhibitor and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity was increased in unwounded tea leaves by treatment of methyl jasmonate. Wound-inducible proteinase inhibitor activity in tea leaves was inhibited by pre-treatment of Salicylic acid. These results suggest that the induction of proteinase inhibitor activity was regulated by an octadecanoid signaling pathway which produces methyl jasmonate for a signal molecule. The northern blot analysis revealed that methyl jasmonate enhanced the transcription of genes of catechin biosynthesis. The content of catechins in the first crop of tea was increased by the treatment of 5mM methyl jasmonate. These results suggest that treatment of methyl jasmonate on tea leaves mimic wound responses, and enhanced catechins biosynthesis in tea leaves.
