Description

Vortex-induced vibration has been treated as a cause of destruction of structures such as collapse of Tacoma Narrows Bridge, sodium leak and fire accident in Monju, and so on. However the vibration frequency is equal to the natural frequency and the vibration has self-limiting nature in itself. These characteristics can be beneficial for industrial use in power generation or heat transfer. Karman vortex excitation is well known. Another type of vortex excitation which is induced by longitudinal vortex has been reported in cruciform-arranged two-circular-cylinder system. The effect of a strip-plate seems to be larger than that of a circular cylinder on vibration of the upstream circular cylinder. Therefore, flow visualization in water tunnel and wind tunnel experiment were carried out when a strip-plate was set downstream in cruciform arrangement to observe the similarity and difference between two systems. Similar longitudinal vortex shedding was observed in visualization. Wider velocity range and larger amplitude were observed in the circular-cylinder/strip-plate system rather than those of two-circular-cylinder system.
