This study aimed at assessing changes in psychological and physical stress among 1982 volunteer public sector workers (1329 males, 137 females and 516 unkowns) who assisted disaster hit municipalities during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The study examined what types of jobs were more stress-inducing than the other. It also investigated whether the use of critical-incident-stress and mental care manual had any effects upon those volunteer workers. Those in the sixties and in the twenties, men rather than women, and those who had direct contacts with disaster victims significantly increased their stress levels. It was also found that those who felt more stress tended to use the manual more actively than those who felt little stress.
