Abstract

In order to estimate the fecundity of a female of Papilio xuthus LINNE under natural conditions, mated females were captured at various time and matured eggs in their ovaries were counted. Field observations indicated that the females mainly restricted their ovipositional activity to the period between 9 : 00 and 14 : 00 and that the number of mature eggs in ovaries per female decreased steadily during the period. The fecundity was estimated at 40.9 per day per female by deducing 4.9 mature eggs per female at 14 : 00-15 : 00 from 45.8 at 8 : 00-9 : 00. Famales in captivity showed lower fecundity, 19.6 eggs per day per female than that estimated for natural population.
