Description
1. The authors studied the early stages of Timelaea maculata formosana Fruhstorfer in two separate areas in Taiwan in April, 1965. Field observations were complemented by rearing records kept indoors, and morphological studies were also made. 2. The eggs are laid singly on the leaves of generally smaller seedlings of Celtis formosana (Ulmaceae). When at rest, the larva assumes a peculiar form of slightly bending its body twice in the middle. 3. Rearing from the eggs and young larvae has revealed that the oval period lasts about 6 days, the larval period about 30 days, and the pupal period, about 14 days. 4. In short, the description of the younger stages is as follows. a) The egg is comparable to those of other Apaturinid species in shape. When fresh, it is creamy white. There are about 25 longitudinal ridges on the eggshell. It measures about 0.92mm and 0.94mm in height. b) The last (fifth) instar larva is limaciform but quite unique, with the third to sixth abdominal segments greatly thickened. The body is pale green, and the subdorsal and spiracular lines are yellowish white. No other markings or tubercles are present. When fully-grown, the larva measures about 29mm. c) The pupa is pale green in colour, and raised and ridged parts of the body are yellowish brown. The pupal skin is bloomy. The pupa is about 18mm in length, and laterally very flat. In comparison with the pupae of other Apaturinid species, the pupa of this species is characterized by its smaller size and strongly rugged and serrate dorsal ridge.
