Description
Based on rare unpublished materials, this article gives a fresh interpretation of the independent role of Russian diplomats and their activity in Japan and its colonies in the Post-Revolutionary years. The "Old" Russian Embassy in Tokyo was among the last functioning institutions of Czarist Russia, and managed to continue performing its professional duties through seven stormy years, which included the Civil War and Foreign Military Intervention in Siberia and the Far East. In this research, special attention is paid to such subjects as the contribution from the Embassy to the anti-Bolshevik struggle in Siberia, its support of the Russian Refugees in China, Korea and Japan, and its attempts to press the Japanese government to solve the problem of providing legal status for so-called "White Russians", who stayed in Japan after the restoration of Russo-Japanese relations in 1925. The author also explores the circumstances of "The Great Kanto Earthquake" (Sept. 1, 1923), and its influence in changing the fate of Russian Emigres in the Far East.
