Description

The purpose of this paper is to consider global strategy of management consulting firms. Many management consulting firms have already globalized and also emphasized its global presence as competitive advantages. However, management consulting firms have to solve some structural problems. They have to derive advantages from collaboration without losing a high degree of autonomy in local offices. The strength of global management consulting firms depends on the strength of individual local offices. In this paper, we address such strategic problems based on the case of Hay Group (Japan), Ltd. Hay Group is a global professional service firm, specializing in management consulting of human resources. Hay Group (Japan), Ltd. is one of local offices of Hay Group, which is known for the assignment with Takeda Chemical Industries to develop its global human resource management system. It was found through the case study that Hay Group implements "Global Application Strategy, " which focuses on delivering global standard services and on global clients who want that kind of services. Hay Group has to share their consulting methodology and tools globally and secure its originality and qualities. The strength of local offices depends on the mixture of global products and abilities of individual consultants. On the other hand, the strategy lacks mobility that has a difficulty to act according to the circumstances.
