Description

Host plants of seed beetles attacking stored pulses can be divided into three categories; (1) wild host-being attacked only in the field, (2) primary host (field-storage host)-being attacked both in the field and in storage, (3) secondary host(storage-limited host)-being attacked only in storage. Small amount of seeds of the primary host (Vigna angularis for C. chinensis and V. unguiculata for C. maculatus) were paired with those of another primary host, secondary host, non-host legume or glass balls, and each pair was placed in an ice cream cup. A pair of bruchid were released into the cup, which was capped thereafter. Each preference test was replicated six times. The result revealed that both bruchids frist prefered to oviposit on the primary hosts but this tendency became indistinct with the lapse of time. This indicates both bruchid can oviposit selectively on the seeds of wild or primary hosts in the field as well as on the pods, but less selectively on legume seeds in storage where their movement is somewhat restricted.
