Description

Unilateral first-order activation of the trasnparatal arch (TPA) is clinically useful for the collection of unilateral Class II malocclusion. Simultaneously, its side effect has been also pointed out. In the present study, force systems developed on the molars were calculated associated with various degrees of distal toe-in bend by means of the tangent stiffness method. 1. In corporation of a distal toe-in bend into only one leg of the TPA will produce the mesial force and the disto-lingual moment on the molar on the side where the bend is added and the distal force and mesio-lingual moment on the contralateral molar. In order to eliminate the mesio-lingual moment on the molar on Class II side, giving toe-in bend is recommended by the TPA leg of the molar on bilateral. 2. It was indicated that the amount of mesio-distal force developed on the molars when both ends of a unilaterally activated TPA is inserted into the lingual sheaths (two-couple system) is about 2.4 times as large as that when one end is tied to the lingual sheath as a single-point contact (one-couple system) on the side where molar distalization is desired. The present study suggests a method of clinical measurement of the force system developed in two-couple system by directly measuring the mesio-distal force produced in one-couple system.
