Description
The purpose of this study was to observe human sphenooccipital synchondrosis (SOS) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Magnetic resonance (MR) images were taken of twenty five female patients in the department of orthodontics, school of dental medicine, Tsurumi university. We obtained following results. 1. In 8-9 year old group SOS was observed distinctly in the posterior cranial bases. It showed a low signal zone with unclear boundaries, running through the posterior cranial bases perpendicular to the clivus. The zone was sandwiched by nonsignal zones which were considered to be bone tissues. 2. In 11-13 year old group MR images of SOS showed various aspects ; 1) the low signal zone was observed entirely in the posterior cranial bases, 2) the upper edge of the SOS was closed, but the lower part of SOS showed the low signals, 3) the upper and lower edges of SOS were closed and only a small residual patch with the low signals remained, 4) the low signal and non-signal zones were disappeared in the posterior cranial bases. 3. In female adults, posterior cranial bases were occupied with high signals, indicating that SOS was replaced with bone marrow or fatty tissues. The results suggest that MRI of SOS produces useful information in regared to the growth of posterior craial bases.
