Description

The purpose of this study is to investigate changes of masticatory functions following orthodontic treatment with premolars extraction. Nineteen subjects who had undergone orthodontic treatment with premolars extraction at Showa university dental hospital were used. The masticatory efficiency, the chewing rhythm of mandibular movements, EMG rhythm by Sirognathograph-EMG analyzing System and occlusal contact points were measured at three stages which were the first examination, after premolars extraction and at retention. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The masticatory efficiency decreased immediately after premolars extraction. However, there was no difference between at first examination and at retention. 2. There was no difference in chewing rhythm among three treatment stages. 3. Coefficient of variations of the masticatory muscles in EMG rhythm at retention tended to be less than those at the first examination. 4. There was no difference in occlusal contact points among three treatment stages.
