Description
Life history of Oraesia emarginata FABRICIUS was investigated at Matsuyama, Japan, by means of rearing in a prefabricated house under natural condition. Rearing was repeated at intervals of 5 to 20 days in 1988. Adults originated from the hibernated larvae began to oviposit on 5th of June. The larvae hatched from the eggs of early in June to the middle of August normally pupated and emerged within this year, though the larvae from the eggs of August were split into non-diapausing and diapausing groups. All the larvae hatched from the eggs which were laid after September overwintered at the mature larval stage. The daylength of late in August when is the boundary season to induce diapause is 13.2-13.5 hours at Matsuyama. It well coincided with the data of critical photoperiod presumed from laboratory experiments. From the rearing data, the number of generations per year was estimated 4 times, and this agreed well with the number analyzed by using developmental zero and effective accumulative temperature. The longevity of adult male was generally longer than that of female, and both male and female became short-lived during high temperature period. Average span of life of adult moths was from 23 to 62 days at each generation, and the longest one was 82 days. Ovipositing duration was long, though most of the eggs were laid during 4 to 9 days after emergence. Total number of eggs laid by a female at each generation averaged 1, 023 to 1, 224, and the maximum was 1, 830.
