Description
1. In order to study the microbiological specification of activated sludge purifying various industrial waste, e.g. phenol, nitrile containing waste that generally are considered to be inhibitory to tha biological oxidation system, isolation of bacteria and comparison of the microbialfloras were done respectively in phenol-, nitrile-, synthetic waste water adapted activated sludge that was prepared batchwise in our laboratory.2. Predominant bacteria in phenol adapted activated sludge were determined to be Pseu-domonas sp., Corynebacterium sp., Achromobacter sp., Alcaligenes sp., etc. 12 phenolattack-strains including Corynebacterium sp., Pseudomonas sp., Achromobacter sp. were isolated from this sludge, and were 26-43% of the total number of positive isolants.3. Predominant bacteria in nitrile adapted sludge were determined as Vibrio sp., Alcaligenes sp., etc. 7 nitrile-attack-strains including Pseudomonas sp., Nocardia sp., etc. were isolated, and were 6-28% of the total number of positive isolants.4. In synthetic wast water adapted activated sludge, Aerobacter sp., Corynebacterium sp., were predominant.5. In each activated sludge, the microbialflora formed were respectively characteristic. Some dominant strains that were specific to each waste were isolated. There were few identical strains among isolants from phenol-, nitrile-, synthetic waste water adapted activated sludge in dilution stages (10^5-10^6) and Zoogloea sp. were not isolated.6. Although the microbialflora were controlled by the components of waste water, the following tendencies were found : The more the activated sludge was balanced, the less specific strains predominant in the microbialflora; the more unbalanced, the more different kinds of bacteria that were isolated at various ratios.
