Among nine soil isolates able to decompose β-sitosterol, Rhodococcus sp. MIL 1037 produced 20-carboxy-pregna-1,4-dien-3-one (BNC) in high yield of 56% from β-sitosterol in the presence of 1×10^<-3> M α, α'-dipyridyl. In addition, 20-carboxy-pregn-4-en-3-one (4BNC) (7% yield), androsta-1,4-dien-3-one (ADD) (9%) and androst-4-en-3-one (4AD) (1%) were obtained as minor products of the cleavage of the β-sitosterol side-chain. These products were characterized by a variety of conventional chemical and spectrometric techniques.
