Description

The energy consumption of air conditioners during peak hours has become an important issue. Bamboo blinds have been touted as a simple method of screening sunlight, which reduces energy consumption. Therefore, we simulated the effects of bamboo blinds in order to develop a method to quantitatively evaluate how effective they are at reducing the energy consumption of air conditioners during peak hours. Our method was based upon validation of the simulation and verification of the impact of the bamboo blinds. The bamboo blinds used in the experiment reduced the energy consumption of air conditioners during peak hours by 25%. Another experiment was conducted to evaluate the solar transmittance of the bamboo blinds, and a simulation of the effects of the bamboo blinds was developed using the value we obtained from the experiment for the assumed condition (33% solar transmittance). Chronological changes in room temperature and energy consumed were also closely simulated. The cumulative energy consumption and rate of conservation generally matched the actual values from peak hours (12:00-14:00) over two representative days in the summer. That is the comparison with the actual values indicated that the simulation accurately reproduced the effects of the bamboo blinds.
