A clinical analysis was carried out in patients who received orthodontic treatment at Kanagawa Dental College Yokohama Clinic during 5 years from July 2002 to June 2007. The findings were as follows: I. The annual number of patients was almost unchanged at about 100 patients/year. II. Most patients were aged >19 year, followed by patients aged <13 years and those aged 13-19 years. III. The ratio of male to female patients was 1:2.1, and the number of female patients was significantly higher than that of male patients aged >19 years. IV. Over 95% of patients were residents of Kanagawa prefecture. Of those, 64.7% were from Yokohama City, where our clinic is located. V. A total of 83 patients were referred to this clinic from other institutions. Four patients were transferred from this clinic to other institutions. VI. Fifty-two patients underwent treatment with health insurance coverge. As for the distribution, 21 persons required orthodontic treatment, 27 persons required treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and 4 persons required treatment for temporomandibular arthrosis. VII. As for the type of malocclusion, anterior crowding was most common, followed by deep bite and maxillary protrusion, in this order.
