Several properties of a PIN diode are numerically analyzed using the finite element method with one dimensional model. The internal voltage, hole and electron densities of the diode are shown for steady states and transient conditions. To investigate the characteristics of the two methods of analysis, finite element and finite difference, the accuracy and computing time for both of them are compared. It is shown that the finite element method is advantageous over the finite difference method for such problems as in this paper.
