Description
Three cases of sclerosing stromal tumor (SST) of the ovary are presented with immunohistochemical detection for vimentin (VIM), desmin (DES), and α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), revealing that all SST cases were positive for SMA and VIM, but not for DES. These results were compared with those for thecoma and fibroma of the ovary. All thecomas and fibromas were positive for VIM and negative for DES, except for one fibroma, which showed positive stainings for VIM and DES. Three of 4 thecomas and 6 of 9 fibromas were positive for SMA. We therefore conclude that a staining for SMA in the differential diagnoses among SST, thecoma and fibroma is of limited value.
