Description

The Tertiary strike-slip faulting along the Median Tectonic Line is examined with reference to our investigations in west Kinki and west Chubu Districts. In west Kinki a dominant left-lateral wrenching took place after the Campanian~Maastrichtian (Izumi Group) and before the middle Miocene (probably before the middle Eocene). In view of additional informations from some other districts, it is inferred that the Paleogene left-lateral wrenching took place in various areas of the MTL from Kyushu to east Chubu. In west Kinki the amount of the horizontal displacement is estimated to be about 15 km. A post-Miocene left-lateral strike-slip faulting is known in west Chubu. The amount of the horizontal displacement is about 2 km. It is dctected only along the Micoene Shidara basin of west Chubu. The Tertiary, especially early Paleogene left-lateral wrenching contrasts with the late Quaternary right-lateral strike-slip faulting. The amount of the horizontal displacement is larger in the former than in the latter.
