Abstract
A spread sheet model for tracing household economy was developed and applied to the investigation of housing recovery after earthquakes. A general structure of the model was developed based on the survey framework used in the Family Income and Expenditure Survey regularly conducted by the Statistics Bureau of Japan, while the input data to the model were collected from annual reports of the survey and web sites of various institutions. A case of a nuclear family with two children and the average income was traced over a 59-year period between the marriage of a couple and the death of the widow. The model was confirmed acceptable based on the comparison of the simulated assets with published statistical figures. Assets of 31 million yen left at the death of widow, suggesting that housing recovery is realistic on condition that a housing unit, either a condominium or a detached wooden house, 20 percent less expensive than the national average is purchased.
