Description

The larva of Gibbium aequinoctiale BOIELDIEU is described and figured. The thoracic spiracle of this species is found to be located on the side between prothorax and mesothorax, and not on the anterior part of the prothorax. In the Ptinid larvae, the thoracic spiracle is said to be located close to the anterior margin of the prothorax, and this has been considered as one of the key characters of the Ptinid larvae to be discriminated from the Anobiid larvae. The location of the thoracic spiracle of G. aequinoctiale here described is identical to that of the Anobiid larvae. Larval keys to families of the Bostrichoidea given by Boving and Craighead (1930) and others should be amended.
