Abstract

We tested the in-vitro effect of 8 kinds of antiseptics against 11 strains of the putrifactive micro-organisms and obtained the following results.1) p-hydroxy propyl, -butyl benzoate were the best among the antiseptics used. At the concentration of 75 mg% (as p-hydroxy benzoic acid), they inhibited the growth of the all micro-organisms perfectly, and also 25 mg% of them was enough for the inhibition of the growth of yeast and mold.2) p-hydroxy methyl, -ethyl benzoate, benzoic acid and thiocyanoethyl acetate were the next. At the regal concentration, they inhibited the growth of the yeasts and molds, but not of bacteria.3) Sodium benzoate and salicylic acid were not effective at the twice amount of the regal concentration for almost all micro-organisms.4) As for the micro-organisms, it was difficult to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Proteus unlgaris, but easy to inhibit that of Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus.
