Abstract

Orthopedic force is often applied to control the rotation of the maxillary complex and upper first molar when the patient has maxillary protrusion in the growth period. The purpose of this study was, after determining the characteristics of two types of extra-oral appliance with a dry skull, to find a pulling method to control the maxillary complex when using these appliances at the same time. The results were as follows : 1) The changes of the stress pattern were observed at 45 degrees in the direction of pull when a J-hook type headgear was applied. The structure of the maxillary complex was similar to that of a simple beam around the zygomatic process of the maxilla. 2) It was possible to specify the types of face bow, which were considered to pass around the center of resistence of the maxillary complex. However, a deformation of the maxillary complex was found when using other types of face bow. 3) Using two types of extra-oral anchorage, that is, J-hook type headgear which has a direction of pull of 60 degrees and face bow type headgear, which has horizontal and short type outer bow and the direction of pull of from 15 to 45 degrees, it was possible to easily control the rotation of the maxillary complex according to the ratio of applied load.
