Description
After the enamel was etched with an Nd-YAG laser (laser output in group I : 66 mJ, group II : 133 mJ) or phosphoric acid (Group III), brackets were attached with an orthodontic adhesive and the adhesiveness and adhesion mechanisms were compared and analyzed. The results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength became significantly larger in order from group I, group II, group III, and were 32.5% in group I and II respectively, and 51.7% in group III. 2. Taking into consideration the surface area exposed to the laser, an adhesive strength similar to or greater in degree to that of acid etching was obtainable with laser etching. 3. The enamel of the exposed surface in group I and II was glass-like and glossy, with numerous pits and fissures scattered about. In group III, the enamel rods or rod periphery had selectively decalcified. 4. As a result of the bond failures observed after a compression, shear, and adhesive tests, in group I, the enamel-adhesive interface failure was largely occured and an adhesive failure of the adhesive materials (cohesive failure) was partially observed. Though there was less failure of the enamel-adhesive interface in group II, the adhesive failure had increased, and the bracket-adhesive interface failure was observed as well. The bracket-adhesive interface and adhesive failures were mostly observed in group III. 5. Based on observations of the adhesive-enamel interface, enamel hybrid layer and cured layers of adhesives that had permeated the enamel were observed in all groups, the width of which was approximately 20μm in group I, and about 35μm in group II and III. These results suggest that the laser etching technique could be effective as a pretreatment technique in direct bonding.
