説明
In an attempt to design a bioreactor having a high oxygen transfer rate, a new tower bioreactor was constructed which contained a draft tube in the lower part and three stages separated by perforated plates in the upper part. The volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient of the bioreactor, K_La, was determined with cocurrent flow of air and sodium sulfite solution system. When the area ratio of the draft tube (=draft tude area/annulus area) was 1.6 and the hole diameter and hole opening ratio of the perforated plates were 2 mm and 2%, respectively, K_La values on a logarithmic scale were linear up to a superficial gas velocity of 900 m・hr^<-1>. At this superificial gas velocity, K_La was about 5,000 hr^< : -1>.In tower bioreactors without a draft tube, without perforated plates, or without both, the coefficients were lower than that in the new bioreactor at the same superficial gas velocity. In a perforated-plate multistage column, the coefficients did not exceed 2,000 hr^<-1>. These results confirmed that the new bioreactor was superior in oxygen transfer performance and was suitable for highly concentrated cultivation.
