Abstract

Studies on the nature of highly purified xylanase preparation were undertaken and the following results were obtained : 1. The enzyme was inhibited by heavy metals in the following order : Hg^<++>>Ag^+Fe^<+++>Cu^<++>Fe^<++>. The enzyme, however, was negligibly inhibited by Co^<++> and Ni^<++>.2. The experiment using SH-blocking agents revealed that a certain thiol group(s) of the enzyme protein was essential to the enzyme activity.
