Description

1) Seven hand-pairings between Papilio polyxenes Linne of U.S.A. and P. maackii Men. of Japan were obtained. The fertile eggs were obtained from three pairings of them (polyxenes female × maackii male, only) and 12 larvae were obtained from one of them. 2) These larvae were reared on Phellodendron and Foeniculum and showed the usual growth and developmental rates. However, most of the larvae died of diseases and only two male hybrid butterflies were obtained from the larvae reared on Phellodendron. 3) In their larval, pupal and adult stages, the characters of both the parental species were expressed. In general the larvae of 1st, 2nd and 5th instar resemble polyxenes, the pupae are somewhat intermediate and the larvae of 3rd and 4th instar and the adults resemble maackii. 4) The lower fertility in polyxenes-maackii hybrids than in hippocrates-maackii hybrids (Ae, 1962a) may be caused by the unusual rearing conditions of polyxenesmaackii hybrids. 5) Only a few differences were found between polyxenes-maackii hybrids and hippocrates-maackii hybrids. 6) The P. machaon group and P. maackii seem to be more closely related than might be anticipated from their morphological characters and from the fact that they belong to different subgenera. 7) Melanin pigmentation both in the adults and in the larvae seems to be dominant to its absence in the polyxenes-maackii hybrids.
