Description
Objective : This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the amount of maternal weight gain at 16 weeks' gestation for the prediction of total maternal weight gain. Methods : All of 1,126 pregnant women were divided into three categories according to their pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) : underweight group (<18), normal weight group ( 18≦BMI≦24) and overweight group (>24), and were further classified into 18 categories according to their total weight gain. Results : In the normal weight group, small for date (SFD) infants increased in the <7kg group and toxemia and heavy for date (HFD) infants increased in the > 10kg group in contrast to the 7-10kg group which was the control. In the underweight group, SFD infants increased in the <10kg gain group and toxemia increased in the > 14kg group. In the overweight group, toxemia noticeably increased in the >7kg group. Consequently, an adequate maternal total weight gain was recognized as <7kg in the overweight group, 7-10kg in the normal weight group and 10-14kg in the underweight group. As maternal weight gain at 16 weeks' gestation obviously correlated with total weight gain (γ=0.608; p<0.001), each adequate weight gain at 16 weeks' was calculated from the corresponding total weight gain by the case-control study method. Conclusion : This study suggested that an adequate weight gain at 16 weeks' gestation is 1.3-4.9kg in the underweight group, -0.8-0.8kg in the normal weight group and less than -0.6kg in the overweight group.
