Abstract

The present study examined the effects of flags set up along Sakurababa Siebold Street in Nagasaki City, created based on an attitude survey involving community residents, on their awareness and impressions of the street. According to the results of a preliminary survey involving 107 community residents living on the street, they favored flags that represent Siebold and the Town of Sakurababa. Two types of flag were created based on the results of the survey and set up. After the flags were introduced, a questionnaire survey involving 75 residents was conducted to examine their awareness and impressions of the street. The largest number (48%) of residents stated that the flags had changed their awareness and inspired them to cherish the history and culture of the town. After introducing the flags, the community residents' impressions of the street became more positive. They stated that the street is now brighter and provides a sense of both unity and familiarity.
