Description
The goal of this study was to compare signage systems applied in different buildings to see if signage systems for one type of public facility could usefully be applied to others. For that, we studied signage systems for various public buildings in the Netherlands. Our focus in this study was to analyze the elements of which signage systems in public buildings consist. We classified the buildings in two main types, and the routing in those buildings in five types. We analyzed elements such as numbering, floor maps, directories, landmarks, pictograms, use of color, and typefaces. We found remarkable differences in the use of way signage for the various facilities, such as the different and inconsistent usage of pictograms and words for comparable instructions.
