Description

To clarify a morphological and functional relationship between the vallate papillae and the foramen cecum of the tongue, we investigated the structural variation of the vallate papillae and its location on the tongue as well as those of the exterior tongue muscles, which was thought to contribute to the development of the foramen cecume of the tongue. The tongue and surrounding tissues including the hyoid bone were obtained from 114 Japanese practice cadavers (47-96 year-old) provided by Fukuoka Dental College, also used later for macroscopic and microscopic examinations. Thin tissue preparations were then made and stained by an ordinary procedure and examined under a conventional optical microscope. Some preparations were made using a refixation with 3% glutalaldehyde, and coated with platinum after the critical point was reached during drying, which is usual for examinations under a scanning electron microscope.
