Description
If we depend on the traditional formulation of the Timoshenko beam and Mindlin plate, the bending and shearing displacements cannot be determined uniquely. Hence, we propose a new formulation in which the total and bending displacements are regarded as the fundamental variables and it is verified that the both displacements can be determined uniquely and that the natural frequencies obtained are not coincident with those by the traditional method for some boundary conditions. In addition, the series-type synthetic method of frequencies becomes applicable in principle by the new method and so from the practical point of view, we show its effectiveness for fairly thick beams and rectangular plates.
