Description

Wesley C. Mitchell, together with Thorstein B. Veblen and John R. Commons, contributed to establishing and shaping the Institutional School. I have selected Mitchell as my subject because I believe that his thought is extremely important to an understanding of the developmental process of the Institutional School. My paper deals with Mitchell's "The Inter-Relations of Monetary Practices, Economic Theory and Business Cycles," found in Types of Economic Theory: From Mercantilism to Institutionalism. In my examination of this paper, I have determined that the two distinct groups of business cycles and the history of economic theory of his writings are neither unrelated nor complementary; rather, they are based on identical research methods. Thus I believe that clarifying the relationship between the two groups of his writings Mitchell's work in the two areas is a valuable research objective today as it helps to understand his basic ideas and trace the development of the Institutional School.
