Description
A Whale Ecology Observation Satellite(WEOS) was successfully launched on 14 December 2002 by H-2A rocket as one of the piggyback satellites into a polar circular orbit from Tanegashima Space Center. The objective of the WEOS is to collect the data from probes, attached to whales for studying the ecology of whales globally, and to evaluate the performance of a GPS receiver, Another objective in engineering aspects is to develop the WEOS cost-effectively based on our experience and design philosophy. As the WEOS is working as planned in-orbit, and the developmental cost of the WEOS remarkably reduced, authors consider that our trial was successful. This paper describes the WEOS system, in-orbit operation, cost reduction means and its results.
