Description
We measured the amount of perspiration produced and changes in concentration of sodium and potassium in perspiration before and after iontophoresis with alternating current in palmoplantar hyperhidrosis patients. The results showed that in both healthy persons and palmoplantar hyperhidrosis patients the concentrations of sodium and potassium decreased after iontophoresis. Moreover, in palmoplantar hyperhidrosis patients the concentrations of sodium and potassium and the amount of perspiration tended to decrease with number of iontophoresis sessions. The decrease in potassium concentration in perspiration suggests the possibility that the effects of iontophoresis with alternating current are due to a complex mechanism involving changes in the rebreathing apparatus in the conduit, rather than to a decrease in the number of active sweat glands.
