High sensitivity of the eel palatine receptors to carbon dioxide

説明

Abstract 1. 1. The eel palatine receptors were found to respond sensitively to carbon dioxide solution. 2. 2. Carbon dioxide solution of pH 5.0 gave a large response in the palatine nerve while hydrochloric acid solution of the same pH gave no response. Relationship between magnitude of the response and logarithmic CO 2 concentration at pH 5.0 was linear for a wide concentration range from 2 × 10 −5 M (threshold) to 2 × 10 −2 . 3. 3. Comparison between pH dependency of the response to carbon dioxide solution and that to phosphate buffer solution indicated that the palatine receptors respond specifically to CO 2 molecule and that HCO 3 − and CO 3 2− have no particular stimulating action compared with other inorganic anions.
