Description

Abstract The crystal protein of Bacillus thuringiensis var. dendrolimus strain T84A1 was dissolved with 0.1 m dithiothreitol at p H 10.0 and was fractionated into five distinct components by means of electrophoresis at p H 8–9 without using sodium dodecyl sulfate. One of the components had a molecular weight of 232,000 and exhibited toxicity. This component could be obtained in large quantity be gel filtration through Sepharose 2B. Use of mercaptoethanol or exposure to a lower p H resulted in severe reassociation of the separated complexes. Structural analysis according to Hedrick and Smith (1968, Arch. Biochem. Biophys. , 126 , 155–164) showed that the above toxic component is composed of a subunit which differs from that (those) of other components with respect to net electric charge.
