Description

Glasses of the compositions <special>20Na2O・(10-x)CaO・xAl2O3・7OSiO2</special> in mole, where x = 0, 1, 2.5, 5,7.5 and 10 were ion-exchanged in CuCl melt or vapor at 500℃~600℃ for 10 to 60 min. The absorption spectra were determined and coloring was observed. The composition of glass markedly affected the absorption after ion exchange and light green, dark green, brown, red and reddish brown colors were observed depending on the composition of glass. The effect of subsuquent heating in air on the color of ion-exchanged glass was also examined. This treatment produced light blue glasses in the compositions of lower <special>Al2O3</special> content. The absorption bands produced in ion-exchanged glasses and subsequently air-heated glasses were discussed in terms of formation of <special>Cu2+</special> ions, <special>Cu+</special> ions, <special>Cu2O</special> and Cu colloids, and CuO crystals.
