Statistical Investigation on Orthodontic Patients Who received Treatment at Fukuoka Dental College during the Past 20 Years

The department of orthodontics started in 1973,and this report concerns mainly the results of the statistical observations during the past 20 years. During the 20-year period 4,519 patients visited this hospital and 2,994 (66.3%) of them received orthodontic treatment. This statistical investigation was performed on 2,994 patients. The number of treated patients increased from 1973 to 1983 excluding 1980,but was almost unchanged with about 180 patients from 1984 to 1987. They decreased from 1989 to 1990 and increased from 1991. The number of male patients was less than of the female patients with a ratio of 1 : 1.7. As to age, the patients from 6 to 12 years old accounted for 69.1% of all the treated patients. Concerning the dental age categories, the patients at the stage of III A and III B comprised 54.2% of all the treated patients. The patients visited in March, July and August ; during the spring and summer vacations. Most of the patients (91.2%) lived in Fukuoka prefecture and 39.0% of them lived in Sawara-ku during the past five years. Of all patients, 56.3% had been introduced to us, a half of whom had been introduced by general practitioners. As to malocclusions, the number of mandibular protrusion was the largest, followed by crowding and maxillary protrusion, in this order. The total sum of these three patients accounted for 79.2% of all the treated patients. As the initial orthodontic appliance, the multibracket appliance was used the most frequently followed by plate appliances and lingual arch, in this order. These three appliances accounted for about 73% of all the appliances used. Analysing according to age and initial orthodontic appliance, revealed that plate, chin cap, F.K.O. and I.M.A. appliances were used at the age of 7 to 8 years, lingual arch appliances at 8 years and multibrackets appliances at 10 to 11 years and over 20 years.
