Nurturing Internationally Minded People through Overseas Programs

Description

The paper discusses the effectiveness of overseas programs offered by universities with the aim of nurturing people with global competence (Hunter, 2000), able to function in a challenging and culturally diverse environment. The study involves some of the programs offered in 2010 to the students enrolled at Nagoya University of Commerce and Business (NUCB). The findings are based on a questionnaire attempting to gauge the impact of such programs upon the students' perception of themselves, their country and foreign countries and people. Our findings reveal the fact, although possibly beneficial, the effects of overseas programs are limited and therefore universities should integrate them into a more comprehensive institutional and administrative framework.
