Description

There are two types of carry-propagation-free adder. One is a carry-save adder. The other is a signed-digit adder. In order to compare the difference of both types, we first consider radix-2 and -4 dividers using simpler adder circuits than multipliers'. We show that it is necessary for selecting quotient digits to refer to the same number of digits of the partial remainder and constructing the divider circuit with pass-transistor logic circuit which has the same circuit structure in AND, OR, EOR and select logic. (1) It is disadvantageous for the signed-digit type because the bottom propagation of positive and negative parts occur in the quotient-digit selection part. (2) It is disadvantageous for the carry-save type because the quotient-digit selection rude is somewhat asymmetric. Putting these facts together, we concluded that the carry-save type is more favorable in the circuit depth.
