Description
English and Japanese deploy different morpho-syntactic devices to express quantity. In Japanese, all nouns require specific numeral classifiers to express quantity, whereas in English, count nouns and mass nouns take different grammatical markings. Lucy, based in his study of Yucatec Maya and English, claimed that such differences in grammar influence the way speakers of these languages classify objects. Yucatec Maya and Japanese are similar in their use of numeral classifiers. In this study, educated speakers of Japanese and English showed no appreciable difference. It is speculated that the differences Lucy observed are attributable to educational and other cultural factors.
