Description
The fundamental and structural changes of the economic world have led to paradigm shifts toward fostering indispensable roles of middle management. One of those shifts is the development of a new type of leadership among middle management, the core players of corporate transformation. I will discuss issues of fostering reform-oriented leaders with basic concept of "shift from manager to leader." The gradual demise of lifetime employment, a typical keyword in so-called "Japan Inc." practices, has compelled us to make another paradigm shift. Formerly, corporate staff would adapt themselves to each individual corporate culture but now they must be replaced by personnel that are appreciated in the general marketplace as middle management with high employability. In the quest of methodology of such shifts, the idea of "conceptual skill" promoted by R. Katz is significant. It deals with the skill that is indispensable in fostering transformational leadership as well.
