Description

This paper describes the experimental results of fully composite beams which consist of a steel H-beam and with a reinforced concrete slab, and are reinforced with steel transverse stiffeners arranged in the plastic zone of the steel H-beams to brace against lateral buckling. The beams are subjected to seismic loads to study the effects of these transverse stiffeners on their elasto-plastic behaviour, including lateral buckling. The results obtained are as follows. Transverse stiffeners of beams have effectively braced against lateral buckling, and have improved the structural performance such as maximum strength and deformation characteristics of the beams. The degree of those improvements has depended on the rigidity and numbers of the stiffeners, but has been limited by the torsional shear cracking capacity of the slab or by the ultimate shear buckling capacity of the steel web in the plastic zones of the beams.
